Last year may have seen most real estate markets flounder, but confidence in property in Turkey actually saw sales to overseas property buyers rise by 40% in 2010. The Turkish Real Estate Investing Partners Association (GYODER) announced the impressive rise at a press conference in the first quarter of 2011, reports property portal House Sales Turkey (http://www.housesalesturkey.com/).

GYODER published a report entitled ‘The Real Estate Sector of Turkey and The World, Fourth Quarter 2010’ which found that Turkey’s popularity as both a real estate investment location and a holiday home destination shows no sign of decline. President of GYODER Iюэk Gцkkaya, said: “Real estate sales to foreigners rose again in 2010 as a result of increasing confidence in Turkey.” This confidence is down to a number of factors: partly due to a booming economy which shows further signs of growth, and partly due to the Turkish government’s investment into real estate in Turkey.

While it could be said that some other real estate markets around the world are focused on survival, the market in Turkey is flourishing to the extent that it’s government is actively attracting overseas interest and investment. There has always been a demand from overseas lifestyle buyers for villas in Turkey to use as holiday homes, but this demand has grown exponentially over the past few years. One of the successes of the Turkish authorities is to learn from some European markets and to carefully balance overseas buyer interest with the right levels of supply.

In addition to this lifestyle interest, the 40% increase in overseas buyers of property in Turkey in 2010 was also partially made up of investor clients.
